Now You Know Why Amaker Took The Job
There were many people who questioned why former Michigan and Seton Hall coach Tommy Amaker would want to coach at Harvard University. I was in the minority - I wondered why Harvard would want to hire Amaker. He has yet to prove that he can be a successful head coach.
He was a good player at Duke and a good recruiter for the Blue Devils. However, I have always argued that just because you were an assistant for a great head coach does not necessarily mean that you're going to be a good head coach. I maybe wrong, but I think Coach Krzyzewski has only had one assistant go on to have a successful head coaching career - Mike Brey. Brey has revitalized programs at the University of Delaware and Notre Dame.
Well, it seems Amaker was lured to Harvard for a couple of reasons. He needed a job and Harvard promised him that he would be able to recruit high school athletes who usually would not take the time to take a tour of Harvard's campus. This will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds.
The teams in the Ivy League Conference, for the most part, have always represented what intercollegiate athletics should be about. Real student-athletes playing sports while going to classes to achieve a degree. If Harvard is doing what I think they are doing, they will regret their decision for a long time.
